“Great minds think alike.”

But it has another platitude that can count as a countertude…

“Fools never differ.”

Funny. Saving that one. I think I will get to use it some time.

That one is new for me too. Can't wait to use it.

For every platitude there is probably an equal and opposite platitude. So yeah, the thread of opposing rules could be one to develop and that rules only apply in context, not universal. GPT examples:

“Look before you leap.” ↔ “He who hesitates is lost.”

“Better safe than sorry.” ↔ “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

“The early bird catches the worm.” ↔ “Good things come to those who wait.”

“Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” ↔ “Out of sight, out of mind.”

“Actions speak louder than words.” ↔ “The pen is mightier than the sword.”

“Too many cooks spoil the broth.” ↔ “Many hands make light work.”

“Great minds think alike.” ↔ “Fools seldom differ.”

“Practice makes perfect.” ↔ “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

“Ignorance is bliss.” ↔ “Knowledge is power.”

“Birds of a feather flock together.” ↔ “Opposites attract.”

“Haste makes waste.” ↔ “Time waits for no one.”

“You’re never too old to learn.” ↔ “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

It makes me wonder which ones *don't* have countertudes.

In physics every force has equal and opposite reaction. In meta-physics can we make an analogy? What if we think of a platitudes as a force of moral reason. The concept of opposites is pervasive in nature and in invisible things in general. Even if a coutertude does not already exist, we could probably make one up that sounds reasonable. Rules are a truncated view of reality with intent to focus us but may always have a shadow side.

Well said. There's also this:

“You can recognize a small truth because its opposite is a falsehood. The opposite of a great truth is another truth.”

Marking that as an accepted answer :-) When physicists talk about the general theory of reality, I try to pay attention. Because they are truth junkies.

Ha ha ha…the trouble with heuristics.

Great points Scott.

My platitudinous bette noir: "My bad"

No…it's your fault.

Just apologize when you know you've effed up.
