Even a broken clock is right two times a day: If I don't know whether the other person is discussing for getting somewhere and increasing our knowledge but is instead arguing, I look for if he can say two things to the contrary of his view, or if he has a bit of "give." If not, then I lose faith in him because I sadly conclude he is close minded and trying to win.

If I get a twinge of sadness then it is time to disengage and wrap up the topic.

Benjamin Franklin, smarter than I am, had the sense to say, 'it seems to me' and 'perhaps' which would work well with me.
